My lockdown, my plate and my heart – How the lockdown promoted unhealthy dietary habits by Khushbu Gajjar

The COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdown limitations have influenced all

everyday issues far and wide. Things are not as they once were. Whole world is fighting this

battle with their best efforts. Isolation, and therefore the constant barrage of stories regarding

the COVID- 19 pandemic had effects on the mental well-being of the population.

Such an environment might also impact on people’s interest in food; for a few a loss of

appetite and reduced food intake, while for others a rise in stress- or comfort-eating. It has

negative impacts on health which could include under nutrition or conversely weight gain and

increased risks related to this is mostly on our health and mainly on heart.

Apart from effect on food choice, lockdown scene and lack of physical activity has increased

intake of high-calorie snacks, takeaway foods etc., which further contributed to weight gain

and low mood.

If I talk about my lockdown, it was never happened with me as health care professional.

Being a Doctor you never get off duty during such pandemic situation.

Yes, it has affected my diet, it has affected my heart and so my lifestyle in many ways.

We, human being are a social animal. We are always living, and eating foods together with

each other since we born. We have never imagined living a life alone all of sudden in such a

way, that you cannot meet your family members and friends; you have to be self-isolated

always to avoid spreading of infection and to prevent such consequences.

My lockdown was spent in Hospital. When you are away from your family, you will initially

start getting adjusted with staying alone, away from home, spending time with self and own

thoughts. Gradually all this scenario will affect your mood and health too. You always have

to be cautious from getting infected from patients as well as have to be certain about proper

food to make your immune system strong.

If I talk about my food plate, yes it was with regular food initially via tiffin service provided

from hospital. You have to eat whatever comes in it. People in that time were already

struggling to buy vegetables and other things but life will change further when you come

across the news that the place from where you were getting your tiffin had infected all family

members with Covid-19 and you were already in the initial stage of Covid-19 symptoms too.

Again your struggle with coping with disease and maintaining your health with available

foods remain same. This is the point where your diet changes. You will eat whatever you get

at that time and try to make mind that you have eaten good and remain strong.

But, My advice will be same, eating a good kind of foods, taking fruits and vegetables daily,

with high fibres foods and limiting salt, saturated fat and sugar in diet will always advisable

for a healthy diet.
